Amiga 4000 rev. 2019 !
After the recent AmigaOS update for 68k or AmigaOS 3.1.4 systems, I decided to review and update my Amiga 4000. In past years I confess that I was a little disappointed by the AmigaOS 4 and 4.1 versions more than anything else for the management of memory. Obviously the system is oriented to the new generations ... But make it clear that the virtual memory can be activated only with a SCSI disk partition connected to the CyberStorm (In the absence of Hardware on Zorro slot) and that it is useless to have it on the disk IDE! Before the recent update, my 4000 had 64MegaByte of RAM on Fast's CyberStormPPC 16MegaByte on the MainBoard and the classic 2MegaByte Chip memory. They are MegaByte ... Basically at the time of the transition from OS 3.9 to 4.0 and then to 4.1 it happened that the chip and Fast memory banks on mainboard were "turned off" as well as the 68060 so I stayed with only 64 MegaBytes of Fast on the accelerator that they were really tight in order to be operational, hence the discomfort waiting for better times that seem finally arrived! Here the premises to do are different, the problems of the 4000 Desktop equipped with the most powerful bi-processor accelerator board go from the physical space to the heat to end with the noise :) is yes. The space was a massacre especially in my opinion due to the cumbersome and bulky PATA cables for the connection of the hard disk and CD / CD player. The heat generated by the processors added to that of the Maxtor 230GB hard drive then made the internal conditions even more extreme than necessary. Despite all the 4000 under OS 3.9 it was flat but under OS4 I had little else to do besides loading the WorkBench. When OS 3.1.4 came out in 2018 I began to study a complete overhaul of my computer, reconsidering new storage units of the latest generation and new accessories that would improve their performance in various aspects, etc.
